A sight of Relief....

Raul Cabrera was suffering from a sight threatening illness, and unfortunately the family does not have the funds for an eye operation. They have gone around looking for good hearted donors to sponsor for the operation, but to no avail. Raul wanted to see life and see his family, but the risk of going blind was eminent if an operation was not done to his eyes. He came to the foundation to ask for help and hoping somebody would shoulder the operation, we called up friends, and finally a kind hearted donor, Miss Pia Reyes agreed to shoulder the expenses. The tears of joy just cant stop falling from Raul Cabreras wife, and blessings for Miss Pia Reyes for having the heart to help. It only takes one charitable heart to give light to someone in the dark.

“Directors’ Cup Golf Tournament swings through...”

November 8, 2010. The Directors cup Golf tournament of the PGH Med Foundation swings through at the Orchard Golf course, Cavite. The event was for the Charity patients fund of the PGH Med Foundation.

The event started at around 8:00 am in the morning with 89 players participating. It was fun and exciting and everybody just had a good time. The game ended at around 1:00 pm

The Program and awarding of prizes started at around 2:00 pm, right after lunch at the Benitez Hall of the Orchard country club. The program was hosted by Miss Cory Quirino and co-hosted by Dr. Elesforo Gana, the event organizer. A short talk was given by the PGH Medical Foundation President. Dr. Gregorio  T. Alvior Jr. who thank everybody for the support given to the foundation, followed by the Hospital Director of the Phil. General  Hospital Dr. Rolando Enrique Domingo who thank the foundation for its support, and calling for more support for the hospital.

Everyone was so excited with the raffle prizes, like the 32inch TV, the Notebook PC, air conditioner, refrigerator and many more. Give a ways were given to those who participated and everybody had something to remember the event.

Members of the board were also there to give their support, Madam Lolita Mirpuri, Mrs. Sally Maliwanag, Dr. Elesforo Gana and Miss Cory Quirino.

We were also honored to have the ambassador of Thailand play in the event, likewise many CEO’s and consultants also joined in the tournament, all in the spirit of sportsmanship and charity.

We Hope that in the coming years we can make the event bigger and better.  We aim to give more to our less-privileged patients.  We thank every who help unselfishly to make this event a success.

Last Wish of a Fireman

In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26-year-old mother stared down at her 6 year old son, who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible.. The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true.

She took her son's hand and asked, "Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your life?" "Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up." Mom smiled back and said, "Let's see if we can make your wish come true."

Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix.

She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.

Fireman Bob said, "we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards! And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat - not a toy one, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast."

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in his fire uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help steer it back to the fire station. He was in heaven. There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Billy got to go out on all three calls. He rode in the different fire engines, the paramedic's van, and even the fire chief's car. He was also videotaped for the local news program. Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible. One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the hospice concept that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital. Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.

The chief replied, "We cando better than that. We'll be there in five minutes. Will you please do me a favor? When you hear the sirens screaming and see the lights flashing, will you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire? It's just the fire department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will you open the window to his room?"

About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window. Sixteen firefighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room. With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they loved him. With his dying breath, Billy looked up at the fire chief and said, "Chief, am I really a fireman now?"

"Billy, you are, and the Head Chief, Jesus, is holding your hand," the chief said.

With those words, Billy smiled and said, "I know, He's been holding my hand all day, and the angels have been singing . . "

He closed his eyes one last time.

Every year, the Philippine General Hospital serves an average of 600,000 patients from all over the country. About 80%-90% of them are classified as indigents. They seek health services from the most simple to the most complicated chronic  illnesses and  acute life-threatening conditions that they could not avail of were it not for free.

However, as most government funded public institutions, PGH’s budget always falls short of its actual expenditure by about 30% yearly. The hospital has to rely on its own resourcefulness and occasional outside support to ensure that quality health care is given to all its patients.

The Philippines boasts of PGH as the largest tertiary hospital for the country’s poor citizens.  The marginalized Filipinos need PGH to continue rendering comprehensive quality care from competent and skilled doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. But how can it be done, without sufficient medicines, supplies, equipment and good facilities?
